Throughout the 1980s, Salim Malik
was the "crown prince" of Pakistan`s middle order batting. Salmi's stylish,
flowing shots look as if he is batting "wearing velvet gloves", in David
Gower's words. Against Sri Lanka at Karachi in March 1981, Salim was the
third Pakistani to score a Test century on debut. His unforgettable innings
at Calcutta against India in March 1987 when he surmounted an asking rate
of 11 runs an over, and his coming out to bat with a broken arm against
the West Indies at home in 1986 display the grit, determination and cricketing
class of one of the most stylish batsmen in the world today. Pakistan`s
middle order batting still depend on Salmi's experience and reliability.
Salim has been consistently an integral part of the Pakistan team except
for some time in 1993 and 1995. He had a successful stint at captaincy
from the away tour of New Zealand in 1993-94 to the Zimbabwe tour of 1995,
which included his match saving 237 against Australia at Lahore, his highest
Test score.
